I'm somewhat of a gamer and am looking at a laptop with either a 5,400rpm HD or a 7,200 rpm. The price difference is $65 which is sort of a concern. Is there a considerable amount of difference to merit the extra bucks?

In my opinion yes, a faster HDD means it can access files much quicker allowing you to progress much quicker with what you're doing on the laptop. Since you're a gamer, if you download a game onto the laptop it'll be much smoother if the hard drive runs at 7,200 RPMs since it can read the information faster. My opinion is if you have the choice between a 5,400RPM and a 7,200RPM, get the 7,200RPM HDD since it's only $65 more and especially since you're a gamer.

Search the forums. There have been tons of topics on this.

I would say go for the 7200rpm.

And I would say that during game play not many hits to the HDD, unless you don't have enough RAM and if that is the case even a 10,000RPM (do not make for notebooks) HDD will not help. You would want a 7200RPM for many reasons such as faster overall load times. Gaming is GPU and RAM dependent then CPU and then HDD to a lesser degree. A 5400RPM would work fine for gaming, little longer load times.
