What are the differing characteristics between the different laptop HDD makers: Hitachi, Seagate, Samsung, Fujitsu?

Are some known for being more reliable, quieter, faster, more prone to breaking, etc.?

Seagate and Hitachi are known to be the fastest ones, along with Samsung. They are fast, and most people agree they are relatively quite. Fujitsu ones are average in their transfer rates, but they tend to be quiter when compared to the other manufacturers.

Ah..wonder if that was why the MBP went with Fujitsu? :(

    Oh well.

Thanks. So there's essentially not much difference between Hitachi and Seagate then?

Hitachi HDDs can be quite noisy with a lot of clicking caused by the head movement. Seagate tend to be a little quieter and Samsung + Fujitsu are the quietest.

Tom's Hardware has a useful set of charts for performance but noise isn't measured.

Seagate drives also come with a 5 year warranty, and I think Hitachi only a 3-year. Slight difference, but both drives perform about the same.

I personally don't care for the others, but mostly because I crave the better equipment and haven't had experience with Samsung or Fujitsu.

Seagate and Hitachi are generally though to be the fastest. The hard disks on my Fijistu desktop are really quiet. In most instances fast = noisy, but not always.

Desktops are not laptops though. A company can make excellent desktop drives, but their notebook drives can fall like flies. I think its best to discount a company's non-laptop drives when we're talking about laptop drives...the technology is just different enough to matter.

I'm pretty sure a good example is Western Digital. High quality desktop drives, but I'm 99% sure their notebook drives suck compared to others.
