I just ordered the harddrive listed in my sig from Newegg. I'm 99% sure that it is compatibile with my notebook. But, I'm the type of person who second guesses my own decisions and knowledge.
What do you guys think?
Keep in mind, I just ordered it, so I'm not using it YET, despite the sig listing.

I don't see why not if you bought a 2.5" and right connector.
-
I was looking at that one I believe - didn't folks complain that it was loud?
-
Yeah. It's 2.5", SATA.
I pulled my current HDD, which is a Samsung 60 GB 5400RPM SATA. -
Being 7200RPM, I'm expecting a little extra noise and a small decrease in battery time as compared to my current HDD (60 GB 5400RPM). -
Matt, that drive will work fine. A friend of mine has a 7k200 in his e1505, which is the same as the inspiron 6400.
The drive will work fine. The 7k200 is surprisingly power efficient, so the battery life will not decrease that much.
The 7k200 will cut your boot time like Samurai Jack cuts evil.

Nice, just what I wanted to hear.
Samurai Jack poops on evil. -
K-Tron (I know you'll see this!) - the Seagate does click a lot. I have plenty of RAM and I only index Outlook, but I still get that "click-clack" access movement all day - every second while idle. I turned indexing completely off and no change. My older Hitachi and Toshiba drives do not do this. Is this the Seagate or Vista? -
bubbatex, this is Vista. Vista continually caches itself to the harddisk.
What you want to do, is shut off background processes whuch you are not using. That will put less of a strain on the harddrive, and Vista will have less to cache.
Go to the start button, then got to the run command. Then type MSCONFIG.
Then go to th services and startup tabs and shutoff what you are not using.
This will put less of a strain on the harddrive, result in faster boot times, and the system will be quieter.
I hope this helps,

Benchmarks will be posted within 2 weeks. -
Thanks all - I have actually done a lot of tweaking and it has not made a difference (actually tweaked too far and had to turn services bak on). Oh well, guess I'll live with it until SSD's come down in price!

You can use Hitachi's Feature Tool to adjust the acoustic management. I believe the default setting is best performance (and greatest noise) but there is an insignificant loss of performance if you select a quieter mode.

you can use these programs on any drive. Basically tyhe software reads the smart files from the drives, and regultes the drive's power management from the readings. Essentially the software, hinders the voltage going to the drive, so that it makes less noise. So in essence, the drive will get 4.75 volts instead of 5v, which will make the drive quieter, but slightly slower.
Anyways, thats how I think it works. Voltage numbers are just to support my thoughts.

I recall that it works by making the head movement less aggressive, which reduces the noise and slightly increases the access times.
John -
Nope - did not work. A few of the features were supported, but not the Acoustic Management feature. However, I'll save the CD I burned in case I get an Hitachi drive next!
Thanks for the suggestions from both of you. (And sorry for hijacking this thread!)
