I've upgraded my gf's Satellite A100 TA102C CPU from a Celeron M 420 to Core 2 Duo T5600, both socket M's and both supported by the chipset which I believe is 945PM. The BIOS is the newest version 5.6, ram has also been upgraded from 533 to 667MHz. When the power button is pressed I can hear the HDD spin up and the CD ROM activate, CPU fan spin up and the HDD LED lights up and stays lit...nothing is displayed on the screen and the laptop just sits there...just want to make sure I crossed all the t's and dotted all the i's before I give up and throw the old CPU back in...any ideas if I'm doing something wrong or anything else I could try to make this work?? I've read on other threads people have tried a similar upgrade and it worked like a charm with the new BIOS version...could the CPU be dead?? I got it used.

I'm in the same boat but going to maybe try on a tecra m11. Toshiba may not have the bios microde for that cpu but it should post. Is it the same lithography

...figured it out...it's a 940 not 945 chipset so no real room for CPU upgrade :nah:

Did you try keeping the old processor with the new ram slots? Do it the other way around too, just to eliminate any other options.

The CPU you upgraded has higher TDP so this might be the reason, not enough power to run the laptop.

I've tried 667 RAM with the Celeron, Core 2 Duo with 533 and 667 RAM...with the Celeron and 667 RAM the computer sometimes posts but Windows hangs when loading, no other combination posts...I've ordered a Celeron M 450, found it new on eBay for $30...it's a little faster but no where close to the T5600 :(

We're talking about a TDP difference of 7W between the processors so I doubt that is the problem...I've updated a different laptop before from a 17W CPU to a 45W CPU with no difficulties...it's practically impossible to upgrade a laptop power supply.

Not really.. there are quite some people who use PSU's of higher wattage when they attempt to overclock. I for one am going to do this with my MSI 16F3. 180W->240W.

You just need to find a bigger PSU with the same tip, or replace it on the bigger PSU with a matching one. It's worth a shot, just make sure the voltage difference is <1

Well, I learn something new every day! DarkoL...would you be able to confirm to me that this laptop indeed has a 945 chipset and not the 940...otherwise it be a waste of time for me...I don't have a spare power adapter kicking around with higher wattage.

You can get a universal adapter, try and see if it works, and if not just return it.

I can't be sure about the chipset, but if it doesn't post with the C2D processor then the chipset is most likely a 940, not a 945. Use CPUZ to confirm it.
