just purchased a used HP DV9000 laptop. love it except one annoying feature. the hard drive keeps beeping and whistling. thought it would subside or i would get used to it. neither has happened. i googled the problem and there were several entries that suggest that beeping HDs could mean that its old and may be dying soon. any truth to that? any thoughts or ideas? (other than buying a new HD). thanks!

Unfortunately no. Unless you purchased it from a reputable dealer and you have some type of warranty with it? (some offer (30/60/90 day warranties) Otherwise, there's not much you can do.

On the other hand, replacing the HD is one of the most common and inexpensive (SSDs not notwithstanding) upgrades you can do. Keeping that in mind, and making that small adjustment, your laptop problems should soon be a thing of the past.

You can try using quietHDD to try to make ur hard drive noises go away ... see post 17 and later in the thread below on how to use it....

If that doesn't work , as crane said , best option is to replace hard drive or if u got a lot of cash , get an SSD which is completely silent...

Usually when it beeps, it's parking the heads. Now the whistling, IDK? It might be a spindle bearing about to die, if there is even a spindle bearing. I know some don't have one. But I'd say back it up now, before it does actually die. And be prepared to get you a new HDD. What brand is it? If you look in the device manager under disk drives, if the model starts with "ST" it's seagate, and "WD" is western digital.
