    Hi,

I have a IBM Thinkpad R40 and it happened a few times before that it didn't charge even when it is connected to the power outlet. I just plugged out and in again a few times and it charged again. However, this time, it is just totally dead. I recalled that I read something like it might be the motherboard problem. Any suggestions how could I test and repair it myself?

    Thanks.

Have you checked your battery if it's okay with any program?

I had a similar problem with my laptop, where the battery could not charge at a level more than 55% and the HP battery program informed me that my battery needed replacement.

I replaced it and now it charges up to 100%.

Does it work without the battery?

No, it doesn't work without the battery. So, definitely it is not the battery problem and it is not the program problem. I think the wiring from the outlet to the motherboard has some problems. This is just my guess. Sorry that was busy during the past days and I didn't get to the forum often...

It would seem the most likely candidates would be the motherboard or power supply. Does everything seem normal when you plug it in? Is there power brick you can use to charge it, just to eliminate that as a possibility.
