Help needed...

Hiya - i hope this is the right place for this, I've had my Dell Inspiron 1000 for about a year and a half now, and very recently its started doing some weird things.

Sometimes, upon opening and attempting to switch on, it wont. Screen stays blank, no fans running, despite being on AC Power.

Eventually when it does switch on, one of 2 things happens. (usually after about 10 / 12 tries)

1. It runs fine
2. The fans start going and there is hard disk action but the screen stays black. Nothing happens after waiting 20mins, the fans go slower and i am forced to hold the power button 10secs to turn everything "off"

During normal running if there is a jolt, or i attempt to adjust the screen position, everything goes black again. the fans carry on, my wireless connection lights turn off, but it would appear that it is functioning normally, aside the black screen.

I've not a clue what is going on, wonder if anyone had any ideas? Suggestions?

1. has it ever been physically damaged?
2. did you make any hardware or software changes before you noticed this behavior?
3. when you say the screen stays blank and no fans, do you mean it's simply not turning on?
4. what's a "jolt" ?

 

1. no very good condition, never dropped it or anything to my knowledge
2. no changes at all - not clever enough to know what i'm doing!
3. i guess essentially its just not turning on yes.
4. "jolt" - if i have it on my lap and then go to pick it up and put it on my desk, then it blacks out. or if i type too hard! slightest disturbance leads to blackout.
