I was looking at the t61 models on Lenovo's site and got a bit stuck when trying to figure out some of the components under "customize and buy." I know my way around video and sound cards and a few other computer parts, but for others I am lost.

Could anyone help out with a plain English explanation of the following (function and use):

    1. Turbo Memory--not available if I choose Windows XP instead of Vista

    2. Bluetooth and its connection to WWAN (can't have WWAN if I don't have Bluetooth)--I don't use Bluetooth, in terms of the module hanging off my ear, but are there other uses for it such as internet communication? At most I may have a webcam on my computer, how necessary would Bluetooth be?

    3. "Smart Card Reader" under Security Options

    Thanks,
    logi

turbo memory is like flash memory built into the laptop. it will be used with vista's readyboost function which stores frequently accessed data on the memory for quick access.

bluetooth is used in some wireless mice, connecting to mobile phones for data transfers, bluetooth headsets for communication. it can be used for communication between many items. dont see the point of having it for internet as WiFi is much faster and more popular for that use.

smart card reader? cant remember what this is. a reader for cards with data or information on them? such as atm cards? or could be like express cards or sd cards

    1. Intel Turbo Memory in theory works with Vista ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive to make your boot-up faster and load programs you use often faster. The "in theory" part basically means there's very little actual proof of this out on the market, although presumably, if Intel spent all that money making it, it should work under optimal conditions (i.e. in the future).

    2. You can use Bluetooth for just about any accessories that you can imagine being wireless (provided they have that function of course)..i.e. mice, keyboards, printers, cameras, phones, headphones, etc.).

    3. A smart card is basically a credit-card-like-thing that you use for security...I guess people in Europe or certain high-security businesses use them. You most likely don't need one of those if you haven't heard of them.
Get the expresscard reader or the media card reader instead.
