I have a Sony Vaio GRV550. It came with a 30 gig 4200 rpm hard drive which makes the system very slow. I want to replace it with a Hitachi 80 gig 7200 rpm hard drive myself. Sony gives no instructions how to do this. It looks like you just unscrew the hard disk cover and open the hard disk release lever to open the bay to get to the hard drive. Has anyone replaced a hard drive in this type Vaio? If so, can you describe the steps you went through or tell me where to go online to get this information?

Sounds like you are on top of it. Sometimes there is adapter on the end of the old hard drive that you have to take off and put it on the new one. Taking out the hard drive should be covered in the manual.
I was robbed by a sweet little old lady on a motorized cart and I didn't even see it coming.

To physically replace the drive, all you should need to do is pull the drive out of the ide connector, remove the bracket from the old drive (2 stainless steel brackets on either side of the drive), fit them to the new one (make sure they're the right way up) then install the new drive.
If you want some tips as to how to back up your old system, and how to make use of your old drive, see this forum:
