I want to buy this Toshiba sat laptop at bestbuy but read a review on it wanted to know if you guys can clarify that he right or not.

"I have been searching for a laptop for a while. When i found this one i thought i had reached laptop heaven, Quad core with an l3 cache at 2.8 ghtz, wireless n, hd display, separate video card. Unfortunately this product has not lived up to my expectations. The processor is actually only 1.6 ghtz! There is a special program new intel processors called turbo boost. When most of the processor power is being used it automaticly kicks in boosting the performance. Unfortunately this only happens when most of the processors are being used. This means it will only work with a lot of things open or an intensive games. On normal things such as internet browsing, word and excel use, email, and other things the processor is slow. With quad cores all utalized i admit its pretty fast. Just know that the only that uses all the cores that i know of is the 64 bit os that comes with it. This is really fast. Everything else i have tried on this has been slow even though its an i7.

    Also how good is Toshiba?

1.6 on 1 core of the i7 is roughly 2.0- 2.2 of 1 core on a c2 the new processor desing is more efficient and require less cycle to do it's job

what have you tryed that have been slow so far ?
there might be manny other reason why your lappy is slow cause many jobs require a lots of data to be sent from the hard drive and THAT is slow unless your on a raid or a ssd

Toshiba is a good brand as long as you looks what you are buying and don,t buy the first crap that lies in the shop

You'd best take the reviews on retail shops(actually, scratch that, user reviews in general) with a grain of salt. Do any other reviews state something similar? I haven't yet heard from a user that an i7(even teh base 720QM) was too slow for basic computing. Heck, we were fine for basic computing back in the single core days >_>

my 1.7 ghz pentium M single core was perfectly fine runing window 7 just 6 month ago

ok so if i understand well you actualy didn't test the thing? having the cores runing at 1.6 will only help you save power it's the only effect you wil prob also notice that on basic cpu task your lappy at 1.6 will be faster then mine at 2.0

Yup, I was happy for everything excepty computer games on my old Athlon 3700+ :D.

I suggest you try and test a demo of said Toshiba(I'm assuming it's from a store like Best Buy or something?) or any other i7 demo in a retail store so you can see for yourself.

so.. if you read your own post yourself again you notice that your problem is none:

if you don't need much cpu, it clocks down. if you need it, it clocks up and is very fast, then.

why do you want it very fast while it's idling? you don't let your cars motor run at highest speed while not actually driving, too. why? because it's useless.

the core i7 is right now about the fastest available processor.

Actually, the OP was quoting a review on Best Buy.

The funny part is, the reviewer has no clue what he's talking about.

Very true. Turboboost drives it up to 2.8 Ghz

    Load of crap.

    1) Turboboost kicks in when you're NOT using multiple programs or multi-threaded programs, by "shutting down" the unused cores and boosting the cores being used.

    2) Turboboost only works with 64 bit OS? Really?

    about 2) no, as it's a cpu feature => 100% os independent

Still are. Between netbooks and my p4 linux box it is apparent there is an overabundance of processing power. The 1.6GHz on the i7 quad core will be more then enough. It seems as though people are still measuring CPUs by clock speeds.
