My wife laptop, an HP Pavilion zv5000, recently quit working due to a faultly DC power jack. Unfortunately, she hadn't backed up her data in a long time and I need to get the data off of the hard drive while I sort out the power jack issue.
Does anyone know how I can plug the laptops hard drive into a desktop PC? It is my understanding that the laptop HD is an ATA variety. If not, anyone have any suggestions as to how I might easily get the data off that drive. All of the new laptops that I have access too seem to have SATA HDs and I don't think one can plug an ATA into an SATA slot.
Any help would be appreciated.

You will need a ata to usb adaptor.

Just simply remove the ata harddrive from your wife's laptop and plug it into the appropriate adaptor. Then plug the usb cable into a working dekstop, and you can transfer all of the data off of the harddrive.
By the way, this adaptor can connect any 2.5" or 3.5" laptop harddrive to USB. It can work with any sata or ata harddrive.

Just be careful with that, read the reviews on the right,a guy fried a USB connector because he misplugged it.
