    Hello,
I just got a Compaq V4000t today. Thats the good news. The bad news is I bought 2 sticks of 1GB ram from newegg and I can't get the ram cover off the laptop :( . I was able to get one screw out but the other two are in there very tight. Plus they were slightly stripped when I got the laptop  . I don't want to strip them any more but I need to install my ram. Should I go to Curcuit City or Best Buy and ask them to install it for me before I do any damage? Please help me out.

:p I don't have personal experience with the V4000t, but if the screws are smaller you shouldn't try and use a normal screwdriver....too much torque.

My suggestion if you don't want to pay labor charges at BB or CC... go to like Walmart and get a small screwdriver like a glasses repair kit. Or go to Comp USA and get a computer screwdriver set. They are really cheap and will save you money rather then getting charged out the wazoo for have BB or CC install it.

    Just my $.02.

Okay, I might try that but I am not sure if the screws are too far gone or not. I don't think they are too bad, but I think the screw driver I was using was bad. The screws are very small. I was using a screwdriver that fit okay, but I think the screwdriver itself is bad.
    Thanks for the tip,
    Tim

Definately go to Comp USA or some other computer hardware store and get a kit made specically for computers. I stay away from Wal-Mart on anything dealing with electronics. I wouldn't trust their high-quality screwdriver set ;)

Would Comp USA or any other computer store be able to remove the screws if I stripped them too much? Thanks for such quick replies.

Most likely they will be able to, but will charge a hefty bnit I presume...only because I know for them to look at your computer it is like $30-40 that is why I do everything myself :)

Unless they are nice and will do it for free.

I am just scared if I work on it any more I will destroy the screw. I guess I could try to ask their oppion for free. Otherwise, I will look at the computer tools at Comp USA.

That is a tough situation. I would definitely give it a try with the correct size screwdriver...like the ones mentioned above.

If the screws don't come out at that point, I would take it in to a local computer repair shop, as they might have the right tool to get them out. I think I would go to the local guys before BB or CC, as they just might do it for free or a very minimal charge as opposed to a blanket service fee at the other two.

I know with larger screws that are stripped, you can use one of these kits, though I would think they would be too big to help with a memory cover screw.

    Good luck!
