    Hi,

I´m working on a study where I should put notebook processors in order based on how well they perform in work notebook and in a gaming notebook. I was given 40 types of processors, some of them I have never even heard of so I´m kinda lost here. Instructions are (my translation):

Put these processors in order based on how good they are in gaming and how good in a work notebook. Gaming score should be based on pure power and work in power consumption and heat production aswell as power. If two processors are equal, give them same score. Example Celeron M 370 is 1 points in gaming and Centrino DUO T2600 is 40 points in gaming etc etc.

Sorry to bother you guys with things like this but I desperately need help with this and don´t know where else I should ask for help.

    Thank you!

Here is the list of processors I was given: ( Some might even be fakes )

    Intel:

    Celeron
    M 370
    M 380

Hm, you'll have to spend some time looking at sources. Here's one: http://images10.newegg.com/UploadFi...otebook/NIC-NOTEBOOK_PROCESSOR_Tour-v1.1e.pdf
    Look here as well: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Notebook-Processors-update.129.0.html

In any case, the distinction between gaming and work CPU is pretty much arbitrary. Whether a laptop is for games or not depends solely on the GPU, in my opinion. Seems like a confusing task to do because in order to make a valid comparison you will need similarly configured notebooks. I'm not sure how easy it will be to find such notebooks for all of those CPUs (especially the Turion X2 TL60, which is practically still unknown)

I would have to agree with vassil, gaming performance these days are heavily dependant on the graphics card. It does not matter what processor you have, if the graphics card aint good then your gaming experience will suffer. If you are looking for pure gaming performance then look for the graphics card first and then RAM, HDD and the processor(in that order). A for as basic business work any of those processors are more than capable. If you are into high end professional applications, then the Pentium M, Core Duo or the Turion/Turion X2 are recommended.

Thank you very much for your help and especially useful links! I agree with you totally about GPU being the most important when it comes to gamnig performance. Only thing that makes the task difficult is putting processors in order based on how they perform overall in business notebook. I have to consider speed, power consumption and heat production all together.

Well it´s an interesting task anyway and I´ll try to put them in some kind of reasonable order based on chart where every CPU gets 1-5 points in speed, power consumption and heat production. After that I´ll calculate points and put them in order based on total points. Don´t know if I get any reasonable results but I´ll try. If you still have some suggestions I would love to hear them.

Thank you a lot for your help!

    Okay,

I ended up with following plan. I took all the processors I could find on the market today, listed them and then gave them score (1-10) in two categories: speed and power consumption. So maxium score is 20 and minium 0.

I put it all together in one excel sheet and listed results in the end for both business and gaming purposes. Many processors get same score because i only used 1-10 scale, but the results are what I expected. Semprons are the worst for business laptop ( high power consumption and bad performance ), Celerons are the worst for gaming etc. However these are only the first results and I´m hoping to get even more precise list at some point. Price is also a factor when comparing these processors, but it´s not a factor in this study.

If you review the sheet and want to make some changes, please let me know! I really appreciate your help on this. Thank you!

edit: I removed the link to the excel sheet as there was no further discussion in this topic. Thank you for answers!
