Is it a good move upgrading my 1.8" 60gb 4200 rpm hdd to a cf - ide with 8gb 266x cf if disk space is not a concern?

It would be prudent to check out the transfer rate of whatever you plug that CF in to. Otherwise you will benefit from fast access times and be penalised by slow data transfer rates.

I recently carried out some speed comparisons for SD card readers which showed that the reader is often the constraint on performance.

Well, if he gets an ide to cf adaptor as he mentioned, it should not bottleneck the performance much.
I know the 8Gb adata 266x compact flash card Ive got does 34mb/sec, which is pretty decent. It is rated fro 40mb/sec, but it may be my card reader slowing it down.

When installing an operating system on the compact flash card, make sure to disable write cahcing.

Here is a nice guide, which I recommend reading:

Suposedly Lexar has a 300x compact flash card, but i have never used one.
The Transcend in my opinion in accordance with the thread I posted, slightly faster than the cheaper adata card
Either the transcend or the adata cards will be faster than your 1.8" harddrive.
I recommend Transcend, for the highest speed.
You should look into Transcends 8Gb 266x card, its only about $95, and it is ridiculously fast for a compact flash card.
You have to make sure that the compact flash card you are buying has UDMA support, so that it can run 16 bit applications.

I have never used ridata, I mainly use larger brands, transcend, adata, ocz, and kingston.
I do not buy memory from manufacturers I have never heard anything exceptional about.

Stick with Transcend and Adata, they are generall very good.
