    Hello everyone,

I am a video editor and composer, and for my adobe and 3d modeling
renders I need a serious Ram upgrade.

My laptop has the k53sv motherboard, asus says that 8gb ram is the max the laptop can hold. Now I was not able to find a thread on the internet where a user with this motherboard tried upgrading to 16gb ram in total.

The laptop has 2 dimm slots, and has the i7 2630qm capable of holding that 16gb ram. Would a simple bios hack/update guarantee the trick, as availability of the 8gb ram chips are pretty recent. Any possible way of finding out other then actually buying the ram and trail and error the case?

    Thank you for your time.

With a quad core cpu, you should be 'guaranteed' 16GB RAM capacity with two dimm slots.

However, that doesn't mean you might not need a BIOS update (not hacked, per se) or a 64 bit O/S.

You might also find that certain 8GB Sodimms just don't work in your system - but the best way overall is simply buy a quality pair of 16GB Sodimm's and see if the computer boots.

(And if/when it does - run a MEMTEST for at least a few hours).

    Here are some quality kits:

    Good luck.

How much of a difference would there be by doubling the memory? I plan on running server software on my i7 laptop.

What do you mean by server software? Are you running a server on that laptop? I'm not sure if it will be very useful to do that. And for a server in general, depending on what the software is, 16GB might be no where close to enough or can be more than enough.

Depends on how much you're doubling the RAM to and for the OP, with his video editing workflow, it would be a night and day difference.

'Server software' is not very specific - if we're talking running many services concurrently or many users at once, it will be very noticeable (given a powerful enough cpu/platform - i.e. SNB or IB based and at least Dual Core with HyperThreading - but more so on a Quad Core).

CPU+RAM=WORK - increase one or the other and your productivity will increase too.

In my case it would be doubling the memory from 8 to 16 gigs on a i7-3612QM laptop.

Its for an ERP application server, ill be the only one on it. The minimum specs are 8 gigs of ram.

Well, if they state 8GB RAM MINIMUM (for maximum sales, of course...) then I would be looking to run this with 32GB RAM or more for more 'optimum' results. ;)

Even with only you running it...

(But 16GB is also a huge step in the right direction).
