Hey, if I missed a sticky somewhere that I should consult, just let me know and I'll head there.
Anyways, I'm buying an XPS Studio 16 with the following specs:
2.4 ghz, 3mb L2 Cache
3gb DDR3 SDRAM
320gb 7200rpm HD
1gb ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670
I would like to upgrade the RAM but I really don't know much about aftermarket upgrades. I don't want to get RAM that doesn't fit or an offbrand that's unreliable. Price isn't much of an issue, so long as it stays below Dell's upgrade price ($300 to go from 3gb to 6gb, $600 to go from 3gb to 8gb).
Thanks for the help, it's greatly appreciated!

What do you do with your system? What capacity have you been looking for?

It's for gaming, a light desktop replacement. Mostly it's the new Total War game, "Empire," that has me wanting to upgrade.

I think the most cost-effective solution is going to be grabbing a 2x2GB kit, using a 64-bit OS, and calling it a day. 4GB DDR3 DIMMs are expensive. So much that Dell might have been cutting you a deal.

You don't need more than 2x2GB DDR3 SODIMMs. Any kit that has lifetime warranty is good. Most manufacturers get their memory from the same suppliers anyways.
edit: 2x2GB is different than 1x4GB, the latter being much more expensive because it is not as common and to cover for R&D for the denser chips. -
Well thanks for the answers rflcpter and sgogeta. I'll be stopping by newegg!
