    Hi guys,

On Xotic PC, it would cost me 150$ to upgrade 8GB 1600 DDR3 Ram to 16GB.

Are they ripping me off? Would it be better to buy my own RAM and install it?

16 gigs of RAM on Newegg is around 100$, but I'm not sure if i could just buy an additional 8GB for 50$ and then add it, or if i would need to install an entirely new 16GB.

    Thanks for your help

Depends if they ship 1 x 8 GB. If it's 1 x 8 GB then you can just buy an 8 GB stick. Usually it'll tell you (8 GB 2 x 4 or 8 GB 1 x 8). Maybe call them up or private message one of their representatives, they are quite active on the forum.

The model ships with 2 4GB SODIMM modules. I'm assuming that there are only 2 slots so maybe i would have to buy 2 8GB modules, which would mean i couldn't just add to the existing RAM. Does what i said make sense i don't really know a lot about this stuff

Depends on the laptop you're getting. Some support 2 slots and some 4 slots. We won't know til you specify.

And no they are not "ripping" you off. It's the nature if the business. It is almost always cheaper to get parts aftermarket than from resellers, with the exception being CPU and gpu in laptops. Ram is always cheaper when you get it yourself.

Also, you can request to get it without ram. They will generally knock off $25-50 dollars off total. Just shoot them an email or pm :)

A good number of laptops that Xotic sells come with 4 slots. If you can please specify your model, we can help you better.

Most of the 15" and 17" models come with 4 slots, 2 under the keyboard and 2 in the main compartment.
