I'm not able to burn an .avi file to a DVD.

Do I need to convert it before burning? If so, what should I use to convert it?

Yes, you need a converter. There are many converters/encoders out there like Nero, and WinAvi. Personally I use WinAvi because it is faster(takes about 30-40 mins to convert and then burn) rather than 1hr.

Well if you only want to use the DVD in computers you could just burn the avi file onto a data DVD. But if you want to play it in stand alone DVD players you have to convert it to DVD format. Nero vision is probably teh easiest way to do this but there may be easier ones around.
