Hi all
I've unearthed my old Packard Bell ixtreme mc 6112 from storage. So, its purpose of cloud storage and such is just fine, bar one issue. I can't seem to install the wireless network card it came with.
Having wiped the HD and done a clean install of Windows XP, the Device Manager simply interprets the PCI card as a "Network Controller". If I ask it to search for the appropriate drivers I'm simply told that the Hardware cannot be installed.
I've visited the Packard site and downloaded the appropriate drivers, for the device - Belkin f5d6001 version 1 device. Unfortunately only version 2 comes with the required file to manually install the driver. I've tried this and everything's seemed to go just fine, up until I get the device to search for a wireless network - Instant BSOD! Version 3, like Version 1, doesn't come with the appropriate files either, both just come with a set up feature that's supposed to be used for connecting to wireless networks, other than through the default Windows route. Neither actually allow the device to be used. If I try to use Version 1's software, it simply tells me that there is no device installed!
This is really frustrating and I simply don't understand why the driver refuses to install. I've tried a complete un-install of it, a roll-back, nothing!
Please help
Renz

Even if they don't "officially" have manual driver installation, you should be able to unpack the drivers and search for that directory from device manager and try to add it that way. If that doesn't work then perhaps look for a USB wireless adapter. Search the vendor's site first for XP drivers though, just to make sure they have them.
Here's one for example:

Drivers here:

edit: I just realized this is a desktop not a laptop. For one, I would run an Ethernet cable to the machine. Chances are, your wireless card for a machine that old is just 802.11b (is this vintage 2003 or so)? And will be painfully slow. Or just add a PCI wireless card or the USB one I mentioned.
