so i have been having some difficulty with this external hd, and was wondering if you fellow NBRers can help me out.

basically, i have this external hd that is visible in device manager and supposedly working properly, but i can't open up in "my computer". i've tried uninstalling and installing the device/drivers, unplugging other usb items in case it was a power draw problem, but neither has worked. i've also tested out my usb ports w/ usb drives, and those seem to appear just fine.

i have also checked out the hd on disk management. for some reason, it won't assign the external hd a drive letter and says all the data on there is unallocated.

if it helps, the files were from a mac that i am trying to copy to my windows xp system.

How is the drive powered? USB(s) or adapter?

Tried to reconnect the cable(s) again, at the HDD's end?

Edit: What is the drive file system? Did you format it using the Mac?

    it's powered w/ an adapter.

i have reconnected everything, rebooted a few times w/ and w/o the hdd plugged in.

it was formatted w/ a mac...and i think that may be the root of my problems.

edit: another reason to hate macs....so yeah, you can't read mac formatted drives on a pc. i got a program called macdrive that allowed me get through this.

    thanks for the help though!

Well, I've seen this problem before - format on one PC then HDD not accessible error(or similar) on the other PC. I think you'll need to repartition and reformat the drive...
Not familiar with Macs but similar problem here:

Have you tried removing the harddrive from the enclosure, and connecting it directly into a desktop as a secondary SATA or slave drive. It should be automatically assigned a drive letter.
