i have a dell 1545 laptop with a t5850 and pc2-6400 memory and i tried to install a t7300 processor and during startup it told me that the processor was not compatable. some other threads said that i can use similar cpu's with my laptop where did i go wrong. Is it that my memory is not compatible with the t7300. Thanks in advance for any help.

The CPU is not going to work with your laptop. The T7300 was for the older Santa Rosa platform (GM/PM 695) where as you notebook have the newer Montevina platform (GL40, GS45, GM45, PM45). Nothing wrong with your RAM though.

This should list which CPUs will work. Read the whole thing anyways, good information.

Technically the 45 series chipsets are supposed to take any Socket P processors, even those that were originally intended for the 965 chipsets. That the T7300 doesn't work here - and because it actually boots, it may not be that it actually doesn't work, even though Dell may want you to think that - is probably not a chipset limitation but a Dell BIOS limitation.

I mean technically the T5850 is a Merom-based Santa Rosa chip as well.

I would imagine this at least would work without any silly error messages coming up, as the 1545 actually shipped with P8600s during its lifetime.

thanks very much for all your input its just very difficult when all dell says is that it was available with the t3400 or the p8600 at the time of purchase.
    thanks again.
