I want to upgrade the chip in my Toshiba SLi1. I was thinking that my choices of possible processors was more or less the simple part of it, but I was browsing through the threads and am all confused now.

What is the difference between a chipset and a socket type?

I have a T7250 now and a PM965 Chipset. This much I know. I believe my socket is type M, but I'm not sure. I could swear that some have upgraded their SLi1s to a T7700, but that is type P.

    [confusion is setting in again]

    Can I put in a T7700?

Some have suggested the upcomming T9300 and said that it was just a matter of BIOS compatibility.

I'm having a case of information overload. Can someone sort out this pile of facts for me?

You can upgrade to the T7700, I'm not sure about the T9300. I believe you can though. Someone will have to confirm that. The socket type just means if they have the same socket, they are compatible to be upgraded

Ok, thanks for clarifying the T7700.

But, since the issue is raised, can anyone give a really quick lesson on what is the dif between a chipset and a socket type?

    ...or give me a link.

Mind you upgrading the CPu will void your warranty too...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_2_microprocessors

This lists the T7250 as socket P, which it should be being a SR 800MHz FSB chip. This means you can upghrade to the T7300, T7500, T7700, T7800, X7800 and X7900 cpus.

I can't find anything on Intel's own site about the T7250 (at least nothing that lists the socket) but it should be P.

But seriously, isn't the T7250 enough? It should be able to handle pretty much anything... plus it'll void your warranty AND Toshibas aren't famed for cpu access, I had to completely disassemble mine to get to the cpu.

It's a P socket, and a couple of guys have installed T7700 and T7500's in their SLi"s maybe post this in the Toshiba section for direct knowledge. I'd wait for the T9300 at $316 2.5 ghz and 6mb L2. I have seen the Bios update for the Penryn on Toshiba's site weeks ago. The T9300 is what I'am going to do. Moon Angel is right though Install is not for the average person.

I'm pretty sure overclocking the GPUs does so as well. Worse money I spent was that BestBuy warranty, could of paid for the processor with it.

I'm not going to put it in. I'm only competent enough to find someone who will. See, when I put in the AEVWD mod in Oblivion on my average FPS dropped to 17 with dips into the single digits. I had to drop to 1024*640, normal lighting, and med textures + distant lands to get it back to averaging 30.

That .4-.5GHz is going to help immensely.
