I have a Compaq presario 2140. It has a 40 g IDE 2:5 hard drive. I want to put a 160g one in. Is there problems with this you can see?

What OS are you considering installing? If Win7 then no problem - if XP make sure you have the SP3 edition.

Also, your BIOS might be limiting you too - (at 137GB it will not continue the install - at least not on XP...) make sure that you have the latest BIOS installed for your notebook before you switch HDD's.

For the 137GB 'limit' - simply choose a partition smaller than 137GB and the install will continue - when Windows is fully installed, you can make the remaining capacity available by adding a second partition on your new HDD.

    Good luck.

Just make at least 2 partitions and you shouldn't have any problems no matter what OS (well considering XP as a min.)

None that I can see, as long as you take the precautions and advice that tilleroftheearth has laid out for you. If you haven't already, try taking a look at the following link for a nice read/review on Samsung's 160GB IDE hard drive, hosted right here at NBR:
