I noticed while i was using adobe premiere to edit HDV, the computer was running slower than normal. I was running msn, and using the quicktime installer/downloader. But i didn't think it should run much slower with the power of my computer. Anyway, the main problem is my CPU usage got so high, Premiere Elements Errored, and then afterwards the CPU has been hanging quite high from 7- 40%.

THis is really strange because if i use as many programs on my very old computer (1.1GHz AMD athalon) the CPU would be only 1 or 2%...

I am running an xps M1530, Vista premium, 2.6Ghz 4GB RAM 5400RPM HDD

its a very new machine, and Mcafee hasn't picked anything up. Vista is supposed to be more secure though isn't it? ive disabled all needless startup processors, it seemed to be "svcHost" using the high CPU...

Try anti spyware programs such as ad-aware.

Definitely more of a spyware/bloatware problem than a hardware problem. Have you done a clean install or are you using a factory image? Most people would advise you do a clean install on a new laptop specifically to weed out problems like this.

But yes, you should try running some virus scans first, though I consider the clean install to be the one-stop solution for all software problems :D
