Lets say we have two hard drives 7200rpm that are the same in every aspect except capacity wise. One is 100gb and the other is 200gb.
If I were to use up 60gb in each of the harddrives filled with vista, office 2007..etc. Is it correct to assume the 200bg harddrive will perform faster? if so is the speed difference that drastic?
Personally I just ordered at Hitachi TravelStar 7K200 200gb and just wanted to know if the difference was that drastic when compared in this situation,

Theoretically it would because if properly fragmented the head would need to move less in order to acsess data from differnt parts of the drive.
In reality i dont think it makes a differance , And it may infact be slower as the head my have to be more precise or somthing?? -
It's not just theoretical, higher capacity drivers do indeed perform better due to the higher platter density. Check out this chart:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/storage25.html?modelx=33&model1=399&model2=400&chart=142
The Seagate Momentus 5400.2 100GB ATA drive has an average read performance of 27.9 whereas the 120GB version manages 32.1, closing up on some lower density SATA 7200RPM drives. -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
HIgher density means higher platter density which equals faster performance. It means more data is collected per movement of the head.
-
There are other factors as well. If it's got perpendicular recording it can be faster. Some brands are faster than others. The Seagate Momentus 5400.3 is particularily fast for a 5400 RPM.

If you want speed and capacity the western digital scorpio is the best one , 250gb and only a little slower than the leading drive?? But , i see it does make a big differance , The lowest 200gb is about 2/3rds of the way down the chart above alot of 5400 rpm drives and its only 4200 rpm!!! and the other 200gb one seems half way up and it is also only 4200 rpm , I guess it makes a big differance then

I just got a 250GB Samsung drive.

How much for and what speed? And also how do you test your hard drive? I wanna see what my average read / write speeds are. Is there a software program or do i do it from a stopwatch and large file?
-
Try HDTune.

Thanks
.......... 10 letter limit
-
It's 5400 RPM and i got it for roughly $200.
-
I seem to oh hijacked this thread , anyway , Ive just run hd tune , is this normal?
http://img67.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hdjm5.jpgIs that better , or worse than normal , its a 5400 rpm hdd made by segate... My sig says 7200 rpm cas thats my other hdd , but im testing this 5400 rpm one right now.
edit:
I re-ran the test and got an acsess time of 20ms and a write rate of 39 mbps , Not much of a differance though -
I have that HDD. That's a normal, yes.
-
That's right where that hard drive should be.
-
Excelent , Thanks
why does the speed deteriote as time goes?
-
Outside of disk has more data per revolution than inside. Outside larger inside smaller same # of revolutions outside is more data in same time period.
Higher Capacity Hard Drives run faster?
