Any news on when high res displays will hit laptops other than the MBPs?

    ^bump.

I miss my 1920 x 1200 display on my gateway. I don't need anything super high resolution, but I would love a return to the 16:10 form factor.

There are a few 1920 x 1200 in the 17.3" form factor, but not as many in the 15.4" market.

    I'm talking higher than 1920x1200

15" MBPs have 2880x1800. I'm talking this kind of res.

I know what you meant, I'd just love to have anything higher than 1080.

Isn't samsung rumoured to be putting out a high res display on a laptop? I can't remember where I saw it..

Unfortunately I can't find any mention of this going into production yet.

What is the fascination with these uber high res displays on small screens? I'd be happy with 1920x1200 matte on 15-18" notebooks. But higher resolution doesn't mean better. Give me a quality 1920x1200 screen with excellent contrast, viewing angles, no backlight bleed, and a good color gamut that consumes less than 2W at maximum brightness. For mobile devices I don't understand either the desire for the uber high res screens since it compromises power/battery life as well.

LOL. Are you serious? The ChromBook is the epitome of cheap. That screen probably cost more than the rest of the laptop combined. (edit: ugh, $1300 for a web machine... Google has gone nuts)

I guess so. I'm not object to it, just I don't see the practicality of it. Improve existing displays first please. I'd rather pay the premium for the high quality "lower" res screen than for more pixels and likely shove the same crap quality out the door.

True dat, but its like salting your food. I would like to send a message to the manufacturers that high res displays are appreciated by consumers so that they realise that sticking us with XGA on 17 inchers isnt really the best thing. About 2.5 years ago, there was a glut of high res screens on 17 inch laptops, I could barely find any at 1920x1080. Now, finally the pendulum seems to be shifting. It would behoove us to convey to the manufacturers that this is a positive, so that they keep going in the direction of putting in some quality screens. We dont make positive noises now, they will think we dont care about displays. So, lets shout and dance on innovations in displays.

The niche is definitely there. People moaned for quite some time to get a screen onto a iPod nano, and Apple acquiesced.

Now, if only I could get a WHUXGA display on a screen the size of my fingernail - then life will be complete. ;)
