The WD5000BEVT has the better performance - see my results here. It also runs very cool. I would not claim that it is completely quiet, but it is not very noisy either.

It is the better choice if you need the extra capacity, but the 5k320 may offer more GB per $.

And comparing the Hitachi 5K320 versus the Seagate ST9320320AS?

    Which is quieter?

I would not touch that Seagate as access times are above 20 ms afaik.
Noise levels are probably ok though.

If you want to go 5400rpm WD5000BEVT and 5K320 are good choices.

So is WD3200BEVT but it has higher power consumption.

I just ordered a 5K320 through eBay. I will have the HDD maybe after 2 weeks of ordering. The drive has to be sent out the US back to Mexico. I hope the drive is non-DOA.

Good luck with the 5K320. It is a very quiet drive. Sorry I dont have a WD 500gb for comparison, but the 5K320 I have used is a very quiet harddrive.

Plus if your using it in your Thinkpad it should not vibrate much at all. Most thinkpads have those long rubber bumpers to suck up some of the harddrive vibrations.

+1 My notebook is now inaudible after installing the drive. It is already actually quiet without rubber and has minimal vibration. I would say 1/4 of what my 5k120 had.

I'm glad to hear 100% positive feedback about the 5K320. I though about getting the WD500, but then I got a good deal, 77USD including shipping that I couldn't pass up.

As a rarity, I got by accident a 5K250 - 160GB HDD, connected it through a USB adapter and I must say the drive is as noisy as my 7K100 ATA-6 used to be. I don't know why, this is a 5400RPM drive.
Can't wait to actually get the hard drive with me, by nature my Thinkpad is very silent so having a quiet HDD is a must for me.

    Thanks guys.

I have an 5K320 that needs to be RMA'd. It likes to screech, clack, and it often sounds like loose marbles. The main problem I have had with it is that Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test software doesn't seem to be compatible with my T400. It simply doesn't load, and the Hitachi reps I have talked to can't figure our why.

Good luck with yours though, I bought the Hitachi based on reviews of their robustness. I think I just got a lemon.

    Hi.

I have the Hitachi 5K320 , and i cannot get the hitach diag to work or the feature tool to run i just get a blank screen and a flashing cursor, it does not seem to support new motherboards.

I use the WD diagnostics for all my HDD`s and it runs from windows , it will be no good for proof of you RMA but it is a good program to have, I check my HDD`s at least once a month with it.

Well I've always had good luck using Hitachi HDD, my Scorpio 80GB is my first WD on a laptop.
I don't care about lowering the HDD noise, I just hope I don't get a lemon.

Funny thing is, I've run the WD test software, and it didn't detect anything wrong with my drive. But I spoke to a rep again today, and she said that the fact that DST won't load indicates a serious problem with my drive and that it needs to be sent in.

I mentioned that I had heard that DST wasn't working with newer boards, but she claimed universal compatibility.

That's pretty funny that DFT doesn't support SATA- you think that Hitachi could come up with an update or program that works, its not as if its a new format. What are they thinking?

    Thanks for the input Tinderbox.

Plz correct me if I'm wrong: I've understood the 5K320 is a 9.5mm thick right?

    Cuz I read here:
    http://www.techtree.com/India/Reviews/Hitachi_Travelstar_5K320_HTS543232L9A_300/551-91600-611-2.html

they claim the drive is 12.5mm thick:
Is the drive 9.5 or 12.5mm Thick?

    Techtree = wrong.

I have used the 5K320 and it is the same thickness as every other mobile drive I have, and thats 9.5mm.

    Hi.

I need to make a correction , DFT and FEATURE TOOL , do support SATA

I tried them on my desktop in my sig, with a WD SATA 3.5" and they both worked, now i have tried them on 3 SATA notebooks and they would not work.

So it looks like DFT and FEATURE TOOL are PICKY about which motherboards it will support.

    Regards

    John.

Thanks for the confirmation K-TRON. Techtree seems is a Indian site, they should've done their research first before stating something that even impact negatively the sales of Hitachi persuading consumers to buy the drive.
