So I just ordered a Hitachi 7K100 80GB 7200RPM HDD for my Compaq V2000Z. How much of a performance boost can I look forward to? And please no vague "it'll just make everything faster" posts. Thanks in advance.

Think of it this way, applications which need to read anything off of the physical drive will do it faster. So for example, if you're browsing the web you won't see much of a diffirence, however, if you're doing Video Editing or any other HDD intensive task then yes, it'll probably be considerably faster.

Then again, I own a 5400 RPM Hitachi drive...

It is not as huge as 4200 to 5400, but it is noticeable in my opinion. It will shine most when you do things that are hard drive intense like audio or video encoding where there is a lot of reading and writing to the drive. If you are just surfing the net it won't be as apparent. Hard drive speed is one of many things like CPU, memory, FSB, how much crap you have running in the background, etc. whch determine system perfromance.

Going from 4200RPM to 5400RPM is the biggest increase in hard drives performance, most of the time by about 33%.

    From 5400RPM to 72, you'll see another 16-20%.

Yeah - as posted, it will have a lot faster access times and will be more responsive.

Hmm... so basically, when I'm watching movies that I've DVD-Shrinked, it'll be faster. I needed an external anyway, I just figured I'd spring for the 7200RPM and use the 5400RPM as backup. Thanks.

i'm not sure how a faster hard drive would make a movie run faster? i mean, if a movie is 2 hours long, it's 2 hours long regardless of how fast your HD is.

Here is a Hitachi PDF Document addressing the performance increases with their 7200 rpm drives-

So, I've had my new HDD for a few days now and have noticed that it is audible, unlike my previous Fujitsu. Anyone else have this problem? It isn't loud, but I can clearly hear it. Other than that... it's great. It runs fast and very cool (30C @ 70F room temp)

The 7K60 I installed also is louder than the stock Fijitsu- I can here it spinning up and seeking.

The difference in boot time was negligible from my 5400RPM. The overall performance increase wasn't as big as I had hoped either. Nonetheless, I'm still happy that I got it. I needed a larger HDD and wanted an external... so it worked out.
