Perfect timing, going to Houston for the weekend, will probably pick one up at fry's to put in my Vaio Z and put my 500gb 5k500.B in my gf's Acer 1410![]()

A 1000MB crystalmark run on one of these would be nice.
-
I have the 5400RPM one :'(
-
Price drop!! I fully expected this sooo...
http://www.frys.com/product/5966014
Already down to $89.99 in store and online, so grab one if you can. Planning to head out and get one today, perhaps two if I can manage it. Just grabbed a used dv8000t (Core Duo T2600/2GB/80GB) and I would love to get a full terabyte in it with two of these drives. -
-
damnit i just ordered mine online yesterday at $99.99!!!
-
Thanks for the reminder + rep for you.
Ordered one and hopefully have it by next Tue.

They have hit Newegg.com.

I'm tempted to get one of those.
-
I just ordered oneto upgrade my 7811FX. I hope it'll be cooler than the stock Samsung hdd, it can run pretty hot. It hit 55C while I was doing some transfers to my external drive in preparation for the 7K500 and Windows 7 I have coming.
-
What is the power consumption like? Will it be similar to the 500 gb 5400rpm drives that Hitachi makes as well?
Is it all in my head when I think that 7200rpm drives seem to use more juice? I could accept 10 min less battery life, but not 30 min less. -
Depends on your laptop. If you have a 15+" laptop, you probably will only notice <10 min drop, but if you have an ultraportable, you might see up to 30 min less.

Great deal! Get one while it lasts!

The benchmarks on this look wicked awesome.

Do you guys think the performance improvement will be significant over a Seagate 7200.3 320GB? This is SO tempting.. because it's $80 with free shipping on Newegg. But I would only get one if I could get a guaranteed and noticeable performance improvement...
Or maybe I should just wait until I can grab a 120GB OCZ Vertex for under $200... -

(They just optimize the drives differently - Seagate for sequential benchmark scores and Hitachi for real O/S 'snap' and responsiveness).
How full is your 320? If its over 96GB filled (and you want/need an equivalent install on the SSD...) then you just spent over 3 times the money for a step backwards (I just tried this with a 64GB Indilinx SSD and returned it pronto) and less than 1/3rd of the space.
Anyway, I just ordered a 7K500 too! (Better get them while they last) -
I have 90 gigs free.. but that's including a lot of stuff (like movies) that I don't really have to carry around with me. The thing is, I have space in my docking station to add an extra drive. So if I did get an SSD, I would still keep my regular HD as a secondary drive when my laptop is docked.
Right now on newegg.ca, this 500GB Hitachi is $83, and the 120GB OCZ is $400. How insane is that lol... $0.17/GB vs $3.33/GB!
But anyway.. I'd love to see some comparisons on here. As usual, I make my decisions based on experience from my fellow NBR friends -

Hopefully Hitachi can repeat its 7K200 'hit' that served me well for almost two years. (And yes, the 5400 RPM 500GB Scorpio Blue was a step up from the Hitachi, overall). -
and now I have another on order from newegg

How about temperature? My use of this hard drive would be as a gaming drive, with no OSes or processes accessing it outside of games, but since it sits right next to my northbridge--in the notiously hot Asus G51 series--I'm wondering how it'll compare to my (ailing) 7200RPM WD3200BEKT in the temperature department.

Do you guys think the price of this on NewEgg will still drop when Thanksgiving comes?
-
King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
I really wish we had thanksgiving here to push prices down ... oh well post new year sales should be promising
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Well, I'm from the Philippines but I'm still benefiting from the Thanksgiving in the US because I buy there

What is the reason of the price drop of Newegg? Is that for Black Friday already?
And when will 79.99USD last? I need to know badly -
Not one can tell you exactly. But if you buy it now and there's a price drop, you can always price match it. That's what I've done in the past
-

You mean newegg will refund you the price difference if you now?
Regarding the end of the price drop, was that info directly stated in newegg? -
Mine comes next week!

I bought this last Friday at Frys. It installed smoothly in HP 8510w.
Acronis True Image backup of old drive restored the system without incident.
The Drive is huge, guiet and cool. I replaced a 2nd generation Seagate 7200 Momentus 120. The stats are excellent. There is a noticeable increste in speed overall, not as much from difference from the seagate as I had expected, but the test results tell the tale. I am satisfied and recommend the drive if you need the space.

dbmcelroy,
Your CPU usage is insane! I would recommend a clean install to cure whatever is causing that spike.
Are you running Vista or Win 7? With Win 7 you should notice up to a 30% increase in HD related tasks. -

sound about right? think it would be better if i had done a fresh Win7 install? In terms of noise and vibration, i don't notice a difference over my 5k500b -

Okay, you guys (and gals) are having a detrimental effect on me. I broke down and ran a benchmark for you.
Quaarjet, our computers are similar:
P8400, Scorpio Blue 500GB, 8GB DDR2, Win 7 x64 and also running the latest 9.5.0.1037 Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers (instead of IMSM).

Thanks for the comment, I ran this test with the side-bar up, anti-virus and all running. Really just anxious to see those access figures. I'm running Vista 32 business. My company has a MicroSoft Subscription service, so I may upgrade to Windows 7. With the size of this drive I could easily partition it and run 2 operating systems. -

Vista 32bit? OMG!
I gave up on Vista x32 about three years ago - try to go for Win 7 x64 if you can - noticeable difference with 4GB of RAM or more.
If you do get Win 7 - you'll soon be wishing you had just overwritten Vista!
And, is there any other way to run the test? I want to see worst case scenario's not 'perfect' ones - so yeah, your numbers do look good.
Cheers! -

Now, you must edit your tag line. -
Qwaarjet - What about power consumption? Is there a reduction in battery life going from your 5K500.B to the 7K500? I am considering the same move in my laptop.
-
-
On a 11.6" ultra portable with 8 hours battery life it can be as much as 30 minutes. -

I'm really disappointed because yesterday the price in newegg was 79.99 and now 109.99?!!!
I was planning to buying it now because of some cc problems, is there anyway to buy it at 79.99 again? -
I doubt it, unless you want to wait for three months. 79.99 seemed ridiculously low.
Even the 5400rpm WD5000BEVT is more expensive http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=Wd5000bevt&cid=16268454636543444742&sa=title#p -

Well, will prices go down on Black friday?
-
Got it & installed Win7 Professional - 64 bit.
Definitely better than the Seagate. Much more silent. No clicking / humming noise.
