Yeah, I tried that a couple days ago, but there's no apparent change.

nice drive but a little on the high side for me at $99.
last monday, i ordered two WD 500gb 5400rpm drives. i installed them last week as well and my machine has been running beautifully since! the best part is that these drives were only $69.99!
so for under $148, i have a terabyte of internal storage on my laptop.that price sounds good to me.
-
for sure its quiet and fast, I'm using it now !
-
timesquare - you should run hdtach or hdtune on your drive and post what you get....
-
Just when I thought the problem was over, it came back.. sigh.. if anyone has any ideas, it'd be great. I'm on a Dell Studio XPS 13.
The problem is that it hangs the entire computer, and here's what I've noticed so far:
-Only happens once every cold boot
-Always happens a minute or two after the OS is finished loading
-Hangs computer for 2 minutes or so
-Hard drive light is constantly on during the 2 minutes
Also, I've ruled out drivers as the problem, since it happens with the windows, dell and manufacturer drivers.
I recall reading something similar in another thread about a Seagate drive, but I can't find it anymore. Anyhow, any advice would be greatly appreciated! -

so above is the hdtune run on this hitachi drive.
and this is the result of hdtune on my new 500gb 5400rpm western digital. clearly the hitachi is faster but my drive (500gb western digital) only cost $69.99. i actually picked up 2 of them and installed them in my hp dv7t.
-
Those are really good numbers for the hitachi.....
That's my raid 0 - 640gb wd results.... -

Dutch shops are saying within 10 days. Price starts at 94 euro w/o shipping.
Importing from US may be cheaper. -
Damn!
What shop do you suggest me to use for this purpose??
Is frys.com trustable for international shippings? -
I do know Amazon en Geeks.com do. Newegg doesn't. Ebay .com can be good too. -
Bah, I'll go for WD5000BEVT then, 7K500 next time
-
Amazon and geeks do not have the drive listed...ebay has one or two but not shipped to Italy..
Frys.com delivers internationally but I don't know at wich costs...I sent them an email...
any other suggestions?
In any case, Thanks! -
-
Strange, I can't find the 7K500 page by using search.
but on http://www.frys.com/product/5966014?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG it says in stock. -

The odd thing is, I even ran the Hitachi diagnostics and it all came out as good. Played with some of the Drive settings as well, and nothing..
I mean I could live with this freeze thing, it's only a minute or so, but I'd be nice to know the problem since it is a little annoying seeing as I can't do anything during that minute. (Though I can move the mouse, and music will still play from WMP) -

BTW, the music should still be playing - it is cached to RAM first. -
what programs do you run? check windows prefetch settings. some programs do this to hdd's as they have some sort of optimizer or defrag etc running upon boot up
-
..just to point out that FRYS.com do NOT export the Hitachi...

Just want to let everyone on this thread know I received and installed my Hitachi 7K500.
Benchmarks, real-world comparisions and even comparing the stock Toshiba HD to the new Hitachi and seeing the difference PerfectDisk can make.

Hitachi importer's can't source this drive at all where I live [NZ] so I was told. Not much in the way of place's to import from either, did find some online place's in aussie that have the 250GB version, which I'd be OK with as long as it actually has a lot faster access time than the 500Gb version, unlike the 250GB 7200.4 which doesn't....if it doesn't, there's no point in going for a smaller single platter
I think I'll just wait and see what WD come's up with, the 7k500 sound's good, but not worth the hassle of trying to get it. -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Not worth the hassle? Depends on what you're currently running, no?
-
Yes, not worth the hassle for me currently, who else would I have been talking about?
-
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Weegie, you take the time to post, yet you don't answer the question! Sigh...
-
OK, I'll play your silly game.
"Depends on what you're currently running, no?"
Not if you can't buy it, the point's completely moot. -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Weegie, I'm not playing games - I was trying to help.
Be silly on your own. -
Weegie, what tiller is trying to say is that the whole "not worth the hassle" is relative depending on who you are and what you do. It's like the whole "not worth the money" argument when talking about computers; it's just a relative clause which will vary depending on who's saying it and what they're doing with the technology.
And he was asking you the question [I guess] probably in the event of perhaps suggesting you another alternative HDD that would suit your uses. -

Tilleroftheearth has provided good data for comparison, that is all that is needed, I'm not interested in stroking anyone's online ego by getting into a big debate over hard drive's ....like has happened in some of his other thread's about storage. -
I don't live in USA so I need an advice!
PS: Why Paypal doesn't make me choose "CA" after "Los Angeles" was indicated??
It make selectable all the states (included CAnada) except CAlifornia..why ?? -
Newegg and Amazon would probably be rated slightly over Fry's, but if Fry's is much cheaper, Fry's might be a good choice.
If your friend is in CA, you might also want to consider if the State charges tax. -
why there could be any not indicated taxes for CA ??!
Thanks for your help!! -

The differences are marginal in terms of which retailer is best. they are all well known. Seems like you get higher than normal utility ouf of having it based on your sense of urgency. So just do it is my advice.

Sometimes I don't have time to write a multipage response though.
Cheers! -
I love my 2 Hitachi 7K500s. They are much quieter than the stock samsung 7200rpm 200GB drive that came with my 7811FX. The only thing I'm worried about is overheating since I'm in a Raid O configuration and can't monitor temps. It feels cooler under load that the old samsung drive which would hit up to 55C at times.

Any other Hitachi 7K500 owner, besides Tiller, that can run HD Tune Pro?
His results are these and that's kind of low. Lower than Scorpio Black and Seagate 7200.4
