Are there any free hard disk cloning utilities out there? Tried the trial version of Acronis True Image 8.0 but received a "Partition configuration has changed" error message. Anybody have a suggestion?

Norton Ghost works well...it's probably not that expensive if you can find an older version.

Played around with Acronis and finally imaged the disk but when I swapped it, I got a "Non-system disk" error. It wouldn't boot up even though all the files copied over. The jumper is set to master, did I forget to do something?

Most hard drive manufacturers have basic utilities to do that. Check on their websites to see if you can download any.

Here's what it says about Western Digitals Software downloadable for free

VIEW INSTALLATION TUTORIAL - Instructions on how to connect your new hard drive to the computer.
SETUP YOUR HARD DRIVE - Setup a hard drive already connected to your computer.
DRIVE-TO-DRIVE COPY - Copy all the files or a specific folder from one drive to another.
HARD DRIVE INFORMATION - Jumper Settings and other technical information about your hard drive.

Can't think of anything at the moment why it wouldn't boot up.

Come to tink of it. How did ou transfer your files? External USB hard drive case?

Does the notebook recognize the HD? If the notebook is an older one and you try to install a newer HD the Bios may not be able to recognize it.

In that case you would need a bios update if available or a drive overlay software from the HD manufacturer.

Go in the Bios setup and check if it shows the HD and if it does that it's the correct size.

I used an external 2.5" USB2 housing to image it. The notebook is a HP ZT3000 1.7/512 running Windows Home Edition. It recognizes the disk as an external drive but not when it boots up as a primary drive.

The problems are the MBR doesn't get copied over, the boot .ini file gets changed or (in particular) when the cloned drive is mounted, it's drive letter gets reassigned (C to F).

Apricorn's EasyClone USB2 drive kit software and housing uses a modified Acronis True Image boot CD to make perfect clones to USB2, as long as one makes sure to NOT mount the cloned drive before switching drives.
