I'm upgrading my hard drive on my ThinkPad. The 60GB Hitachi 7k60 I have now is too small to contain the XP, Linux and recovery partitions, and be usuable. The two contenders are the 100GB Hitachi 7k100 and the 100GB Seagate Momentus 7200.1. They are close enough in price so it won't matter. Which one and why?

I was just looking into to this.
Hitachi, if you aren't a noise freak it provides better performance and a better price.
Seagate, if you are a noise freak and want the most quiet drive available.
I'm leaning towards seagate myself. While it's performance it lower, I want the most quiet drive possible.
Here's a review that answers your questions. I found it very helpful myself.
7k100 vs Momentus 7200.1 -
i know this is a little irrelevent but i always favor japanese brands just because that is how i am
if i get a new part for my car, japanese, computer japanese, i am just a fan of japanese products, so i say Hitachi, and also i have heard very good things about hitachi and have been recommended it many times, i am planning on getting a 7k100 100gb to put in place of my 80gb 4200rpm hitachi in my N6210 right now, but i will just put the 80gb in my secondary hdd slot
i am planning on Hitachi, because it's performance is great, sound is not that important as they are both pretty quiet anyway, and it is japanese and i am stupid like that ^_^
my 80gb hitachi drive is easily quiet enough for me, and i'm sure a newer 7k100 is just as quiet even though it is faster
and after looking at the info,
the 7k100 is faster, consumes less power, and is cheaper, and according to the info, the 7k100 is quieter than the 7k60, so if the noise doesn't bother you i would say definitely go for the 7k100 -
That's the thing. I really like Hitachi, but I have an issue with noise. Is there any site that let's me hear what the noises sound like?
I like the hitachi for the speed and performance, but the Seagate does run cooler and apparently more quiet (once again, I wish there was a way for me to hear the difference).
Power consumpstion is minimal with the one review citing a 7 min difference only. -

Seagate... [Period]

i don't think the noise on the Hitachi is an issue at all, it is quieter than the 7k60.
in my opinion it is much better to have the performance and alot better price than a little tiny bit louder.
i think most people wouldn't recognize the 7k100 as really being loud at all. -
Actually both of these drives are known for their reliability and performance... Either of the two will perfectly fine... One maybe a little bit better but i bet if you have the two of them working together in different lappys you could hardly observe the difference in perfomance.. both of them are 7200 rpm, so they are fast drives that will put your computer experience to the full..
I voted for Hitachi, though, since i think it's a little bit better in reliability... -
Don't the hitachi's kinda run warm?

sorry to hijack your thread a little zazonz, but to those picking seagate, is it possible to explain your reasons why.
I was personally leaning towards seagate myself, but after reading some views on hitachi, I'm starting to sway. The only sticking point, is if I figure out how noisy is "noisy:. -
All of my experiance is with seagate, i have a drive utility on CD that was produced by seagate that will troubleshoot problems with hard drives(not only theirs but others as well)
i've only ever used seagate and i've never had a problem, after reading reviews about them being better than most other drives, i cant see a reason why to switch now, or ever. unless they suddenly stop doing good...which could happen i suppose... -
I wrote something on the Maxtor Vs. Seagate thread about why I love Seagate.
