So i currently have the Hitachi 160GB 7200 rpm drive in my 1520. I want to upgrade to the 320GB 5400 rpm drive. According to the data sheets, the 5200 rpm drive has a 2ms slower seek average seek time. Will I notice this? The 7200 rpm drive is 10ms and the 5400 is 12ms. Would this be noticeable? It's only 2ms, but it's a 17% difference. Also, the average seek time with my 7200 rpm drive (as stated by HDTune) is around 17ms. The data sheet says 10ms. Any ideas?

don't pay attention to data sheets, in benchmarks 7200's normally have about 14ms and 5400's about 17ms. The 2-3ms difference will in most cases be negligible. The 320gb 5400rpm drive should have a higher platter density, meaning an equal read/write speed to the 200gb 7200rpm hd.
    hope this helped!

I know the I/O speed will be better, but I'm mainly in it for more space. If you don't think the access time will be noticable I'll do it. Also, is there a better way to copy my files over than by using DriveImageXML off a BartPE disk, sending that image to an external, installing the new HD, then restoring the image with the BartPE disk?

And thanks for the quick replies.

I don't need nearly that much space, nor do I want to pay that much. Thanks, though.

No apparent difference can be noted between the two drives. The high data density of the 320gb drive makes up for the difference in rotation speeds. 2 ms will not be noticeable at all even when transfering lots of files.

The way I see it get the 5K320 because the difference in performance to the 7K200 is negligible and you have 120Gb more space.
If you really care for a noticeable performance boost you should wait for SSD prices to come done and until then go for the bigger 320GB drive.

    Why 2 disks? isn't the 3 platter one 5400rpm a better choice?

And the 5K320 has a rebate that makes it $110 @ newegg (AND free shipping!). I might have to jump on one myself.

The Samsung 500GB is said to have 3 platters but squeezed into the standard 9.5mm thickness. Tom's Hardware have benchmarked one, but they are hard to find.
