Hey
Which would you get:
Hitachi Travelstar 5K500.B, Western Digital WD5000BEVT or Toshiba MK5055GSX?
-
You could try getting the 500GB Toshiba 5,400rpm, it's the drive with the lowest wattage usage compared to all 5,400rpm SATA drives, supposedly it got 8 hours on a laptop review somewhere on the net. Tom's Hardware charts confirms it.
-
1-1.....I need a bit of better confirmation...
Another important point:
Western Digital WD5000BEVT 88 euros
Hitachi Travelstar 5K500.B 107.98 euros -
Cheapest option. The performance differences aren't significant enough for you to worry about the differences between them, get the cheapest.
-
I got the Hitachi because it was cheapest when I bought it for my Thinkpad's ultrabay. Agreed get the cheapest of the two. The WD also has faster access time which maybe more noticeable than the Hitachi's slightly lower power draw. Didn't know Toshiba had a new hard drive out, interesting power consumption.
-
So I should get the cheapest before the one that draws less power?

I bought the Hitachi because it consumed noticeable less power than the WD.
I also had an older WD which became quite hot compared to the competition.
And because power consumption and heat are important things for me and the Hitachi is much better in both aspects, just negligble slower than the WD, that's why I've bought the Hitachi.
If heat and battery life isn't important for you, then buy the cheaper drive.
How good the Toshiba is, don't know. As t30power said, according to Toms Hardware Guide, it consumes even less power. Sadly there aren't many reviews about it, and I wouldn't trust only one source. We also don't know anything about noise. It's worth a look, but you should search for a few more reviews first. -
get whichever you can get for less. (I own both)

The Toshiba MK5055GSX is at 82 euros....Hmmm
-
Could someone fix/reset the poll/title and add the Toshiba MK5055GSX?
-
Get the Hitachi Travelstar 5K500.B. Quiet, cool and fast.
-
1: Price
2: Space (largest)
3: Power (to save battery life)
Thats the order of preference from 1 to 3 being the least.
With those factors, which HDD should I lean by? Of course I know that a 5GB HDD is going to be the best #1 (price) but something between those 3. -
Just a recap:
Hitachi Travelstar 5K500.B: 151.99 euros
Western Digital WD5000BEVT: 85.30 euros
Toshiba MK5055GSX: 81.92 euros -
So expensive. Just bought a 5K500.B 500GB only 110 CAD$.
-
-
My preference is the WD5000BEVT. I just put one in my PS3 and it runs very cool. I swear the fan spins up less than it used to...
Could be my imagination though.
I plan on putting another in my laptop. -
-
get the WD. almost everything equal, and 70 euros less.
no brainer. -

Lowest Power consumption:
Toshiba < Hitachi 5k500.b < WD5000BEVT
Price
Toshiba < WD5000BEVT < Hitachi 5k500.b
Size
Toshiba = WD5000BEVT = Hitachi 5k500.b
Toshiba ticks all the boxes ahead of the WD/Hitachi. Hitachi is way overpriced, so I wouldn't even look at it. Is the Fujitsu MJA2500BH cheap in Europe? Similar specs/performance to the 5k500.b. -
Toshiba has lowest power consumption while idling, Hitachi has the lowest power consumption for watching videos.
I would go for WD5000BEVT though because it's faster. I don;t care about 10 minutes of battery life. -
-
Personally, I like the WD but thats just a opinion from the brand name. The rest are just ty in the desktop section. -
On a Z520 laptop with 7 hours battery life it will be more than 10 minutes.
On a T9500 laptop with 9800GTS it will be much less than 10 minutes. -
-
If you REALLY need to know the effect on battery life you will have to observe your powerdraw with RMClock, and you can calculate the effect of different hard drives by using the capacity of your battery. -
-
I guess ill go with the WD. Thank you.
-
Ive decided to buy it as soon as 7 goes RTM and I can get it.
