Anyone have an opinion they'd like to share on this hd? Right now it's my first choice to replace my existing Hitachi Travelstar 4200rpm. I'm also considering the Seagate Momentus 7200.1 as an alternative. Everything I've read about both of these drives has been largely positive, but the Hitachi seems to edge out the Seagate drive a little in one article I read. Thanks in advance!

Yes, this is a common situation to find yourself in if you're looking to upgrade to a high-end 7200 RPM notebook drive. Basically, they are both excellent drives.
The Hitachi is technically a little faster, though not usually noticeable, and a little noisier. There are mixed opinions on whether the noises are anything to take note of. The Hitachi is cheaper.
The Seagate tends to run extremely quiet. It costs a bit more and comes with a 5-year warranty vs. Hitachi's 3-year warranty. -

The Hitachi actually ran cooler and a hair faster than the Seagate, though, and had more complete feature support. I'd go with the Hitachi. -

It profiles both of the hard drives in question.
When I was ordering my notebook I specified the hitachi 7200 100gb but they were out of stock and I couldnt wait the 3 weeks so I just took the seagate 7200.1 100gb. I personally know that int he desktop market, hitachi is known for its speed and perfromance in the 7200rpm market, easily blows away seagate. I was jsut wondering why the other "big" notebook brands such as fujitsu, toshiba and WD havent gotten into the 7200rpm hd's... I see some "top of the line" toshibas offer 200gb 4200rpm hd's. To take a 4200rpm hd now is madness.
PS. My PC specs... I got it about 3 weeks ago

The drive in my notebook is a Hitachi. Its dead quiet and ive had absolutly no problems with it at all. I cant say anything on the seagate, but from a person who uses their notebook alot, I have nothing negitive to say about my hard drive. Its fast, quiet, and cool.

The Hitachi 7k100 I'm using right now seems a little more clicky than the 7k60 I had on my T42, but otherwise seems normal.
-
Yes what ZaZ said, Hitachi's tend to be "clicky" when they run or even idle. This way you'll always know when it's "thinking". If it drives you nuts, get NHC (google it) and set the hard drive setting to "quite". It'll go slower but you won't hear any more clicks.

I have always favored Hitachi drives in laptops, because they are a little faster, and are very reliable.

The performance difference between the 100GB 7200RPM Hitachi and Seagate drivers will be unnoticeable as posted. I have used both drives and it was impossible to tell the difference.
A factor that will contribute to how much noise the drive makes is the notebook design and the drives placement within the notebook. In my laptop, there is some audible clicking when the drive is accessed (I have the Hitachi), yet other notebooks I have used with this drive showed no clicking at all. I would advise not worrying about it. You cannot go wrong with either drive.
