Hitachi VS Seagate (not another)

So I ordered my laptop back in November, but recently I had HD problems and had to send the HD back. After a little confusion of where it went after I sent it, I realise that I was given a 100gig 7200 Seagate instead of the 100gig 7200 Hitachi that I initially ordered. I paid for the Hitachi at $209.

I was under the impression the general concensus was that Hitachi is a little faster, but hotter, and vice versa for Seagate. Seagate has 5yr warrenty, Hitachi only 3yr.

I called and they said they can send me which ever I want. Since I paid for the Hitachi, first question is how much more did I spend? If I stay with the Seagate should I get some money back? On their website they dont have the 100gigs anymore, but the price difference for the 80's are Seagate $89 and Hitachi $122. Does that price spread still stay for the 100gigs??

And again I guess, which one is faster?

 

what you need is the model numbers of the drives to compare performance since seagate at least can have 2-3 different models of 7200 100GB drives (thats what they did with the 5400s)

the price difference may not be the same, check newegg.com or other places for references though

 

There's no big performance difference either way. I'd go with the drive that's most reliable (which I'd assume to be the one with the longest warranty)

However, I had a Seagate disk die on me just last week. It was brand new though, and I got a replacement without any fuss, so doesn't really bother me.

 

The prices moved around alot between the two anyway. When I bought my 100gb Seagate 7200rpm, it was over $30 more than both Hitachi equivalents at the time. With this in mind, you did not neccessarily get ripped off getting one over the other.

 

you might also want to consider the noise factor. i found the hitachi 100 gb 7200rpm hd to be pretty loud and have heard that the seagate is fairly quiet.

 

I'll second that. My Seagate was just as quiet as the 5400.2 version I had previously.

 

In some benches on the Tom's Hardware HDD chart, the Hitachi runs faster than the Seagate. But, the Seagate is known to run quieter and to consume slightly less power. It also comes with a 5 year warranty instead of a 3 year warranty.

All in all, it doesn't really matter. Both hard drives are very well regarded and both will provide great performance.

 

Definitely, I've used both Hitachi and Seagate 2.5" 7200RPM 100GB drives, the Seagate is by far quieter and significantly cooler. The Hitachi seeks are much louder, spinning is pretty similar between the two.

I didn't notice any speed difference, and both were in a high end T60 so very much a bottleneck.

I've been very happy with Seagate reliability of the 50+ drives I've used from them over the last 8 years or so. I've only used a few from other brands, though.

 

I remember finding out something about the 5 year warranty. I think it was 3 years replacement but after that they do something else, either try to fix it or give you a refurbished one, not too sure but either way its a good warranty. Seagates have always been known to run quieter than others and the new 7200rpm drives are said to run just as cool and consume just as much power as their 5400 as someone mentioned. Ive had mostly Seagates so far and my first one got bad sectors but never failed or broke for years and I had a 40GB die on me once but all in all I am very happy with their reliability.

 

I'd say get the seagate momentus 7200.2

The reviews on tom's hardware show it is the fastest hard drive by a significant margin among 7200rpm drives. Good luck finding them though, they always seem to be out of stock.

 

well since he's getting it from his laptop manufacturer, he doesnt really have to worry about that in a way
