Last month, I upgraded my hard drive in my Toshiba M30 from the standard 4200 RPM to a Hitachi Travelstar 7200 RPM. The drive works, no data corruption or crashing, but I find it has a weird spinup interval.

I think the drive has a feature called "Staggered spin up" and I also THINK that it works as a power saving feature. However, I find it a little annoying when it's plugged into the wall and running at full power.

Don't get me wrong, it's not the end of the world... but I just thought if anyone knows of a way to optimize this drive so that it doesn't spin down, I would appreciate it.

did you try to get the tools from hitachi's site. I remember I did that when I first got mine, and optimized all the settings for performance instead of power saving since I have a DTR anyway.

If you don't find them let me know, I guess I can always figure out where I got them from in the first place! :)

    Alright, there is:

    Drive Fitness Test
    Ontrack Data Advisor
Feature Tool (I think this is the one you are referring to) but... I don't have a diskette, so I'll try creating a bootable CD and update the post.

yup the feature tool. get the cd iso and use that.

they also have a little windows app (power booster 2k) that allows you to change power management, but you can do this thru ftools too.

well, I don't know what to do now... I ran Feature Tool and changed the Power management setting to "Performance" (all other settings were already set for performance), but my drive is still doing it... spinning down. Sometimes when I click IE, there is tiny delay as it spins up again. Oh well... I emailed Hitachi tech support.

What's the link to the tools? I want to make sure I'm getting the same ones you guys are playing with.

    [EDIT] Nevermind found it!
