I fail to see how this can help. The optical drives slow speed it from how fast it can read the disk, having a faster transfer of data to storage would still leave the actual disk reading being the slowest part.

The hybrid HDD makes sense since the HDD often times is the slowest part of a system and the SSD built in can help elevate a bottleneck.

Or perhaps the SSD in the optical drive is for storage and has nothing to do with the optical drive at all (have not read the link...)

Its like the hybrid hdd solution, only this is integrated inside the optical drive.
It will show up as a ssd and hopefully work just like a regular ssd.
This way you dont need to remove the optical drive to make room for a second hdd / ssd.
They just have to slim it down so that it can fit the average notebook. xD

The article isn't super clear, but this is the way it seems to be done. It really wouldn't make sense any other way. The confusion just comes from assuming it is the same way the hybrid hard drives are now.

basically, all they're doing is combining a SSD, HDD, and an optical drive into one package, correct?

It's got two roles apparently- one is to act like an SSD drive, which can be useful on small laptops with one hard drive bay so you can get an SSD HDD combo, and two is to somehow help buffer damaged DVDs or something.
I'm just not sure how those two roles work together..
But it does sound pretty useful to have in any laptop...
Also if they can make an SSD out of an ODD imagine what would happen if a motherboard would come with an onboard SSD... Could make things so much simpler...

    don't get too excited folks.....

if you read the product release carefully, you will see that the 1g release is 12.7 mm thick, too thick for most/all notebooks.

The 2g release, March 2011 (probably meaning IF the 1g release sells well), will be 9.5 mm thick, suitable for notebooks.

Computex is famous for hosting product releases that never actually make it to market.

Yeah, but as a proof of concept.. I mean, if you can add SSD to an ODD why not put some on a motherboard, or processor?

Cost of notebooks would rise and would have to be non-optional unlike this

Interesting, I may try this in my M860ETU.

It won't fit most laptops. My M860ETU, for example, uses a 12.7mm ODD.

    So does the 14" HP 8440p/w, 15" 8540p/w and Lenovo W510 (12.7mm ODD).
