How are hitachi hard drives compared to the seagate hard drives? I have seagate in my desktop and I can always trust this company for a well built hd. Just not sure about hitachi though.
I'm considering on choosing a Hitachi hd over a seagate since its cheaper, but I'm afraid I might be making the wrong decision. Any opinion will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Hitachi are reliable. And in fact their 7200RPM is faster than seagates.
In general Fujitsu, Seagate and Hitachi are all good choices. Seagate tend to run coolest. -
Ive hear the Hitachi is very loud, Take a look at laptoplogic.com they have a good guide on the various brands and their good and bad sides for hard drives. I think they said seagate came out ontop because it was the quietest and most reliable.

There is also a comparitive of a load of 2.5"ers at Storage reviews here.
My hitachi 7K60 clicks on seeking not reading. But the clicking can be reduced by playing around with the settings (acoustics setting), but that decreases performance a bit so I prefer to just get as much speed as possible. Notebook drives are tooooo slow (compared to desktops) to start with! -
What do you think?

Constant clicking is a sign of death...but that's different than occasional clicking when it begins to seek.
Do a google on how a hard drive works, and you'll understand what's making the clicking noise. -
Mine clicks on seeking since day 1. I cannot really explain how to differentiate a seeking click from a "sign of death click".
The seeking click can be reduced by getting a bootable tool from hitachi that allows you decrease the acoustic noise it produces (I can notice a difference when I do that) but there is a slight decrease in performance.
I think this utility is called "Ftools" and it allows you to tap into a few settings (power management is another good one to decrease power consumption and heat). They also have a guide on how to use it.
If you have trouble with it, come back here and ask! -

If it is just the seeking, the answer is no. It's just a "feature" ... noisy
But mine clicks all the time, even when in windows and I am not accessing the drive, everyonce in a while it clicks when windows decides to read/write something to the pagefile -
Seagate's have a 5 year warranty which is a very good reason to go with them.

I love my seagate great drive super quiet and runs as cool as a 5400 rpm not to mention 5 year warranty. Clicking seems to be a characteristic of hitachi so i wouldnt worry about it. the clicking when a drive is going to do sounds more dramatic its louder and you can feel it like its hitting something.

I concur with everyone above. My Seagate is practically silen. I have to put my ear by the touchpad to hear it. As far as I've heard, Hitachis are quite fast, but also quite loud.
