So I finally decided to polish the performance of my PC in the storage department as well, and so I intend to buy an SSD. However, I am torn between the tried and true Crucial M4 (512GB) and its heir, the M500 (480GB). I can't say either has a particularly encouraging price, but the M500 is slightly cheaper (and 32GB smaller). Which is the smartest buy?

have to agree. and few GB difference doesn't mean much with such capacity anyway. so m500. -

Forget the capacity difference (if you want max performance; you will leave more than that 'unallocated' anyways...).
The M500 wins simply for PERFORMANCE reasons over the old, trusty, loved... but much slower M4.

Pick the m4 if you are really really paranoid about reliability. Its probably has the most predictable (not necessarily infallible) and proven track record simply due to Crucial's dedication to fixing bugs and time on market.
Otherwise, the m500 wins in just about every other area. -
Thanks for your thoughts, I believe the M500 is the victor. At this point, I don't really mind its 32GB less space vis a vis the M4, as my 250GB HDD is chock full of stuff, so any increase in storage capacity is welcome.

The 32 gb is built in op. Iirc this and the new marvell controller give it very good performance as the drive gets full.
Add to that newer tech like hardware encryption, built in capacitors, etc and it's hands down the better drive, which will only get better as firmware matures even more.
The only reason to get the m4 is its significantly cheaper.

Hmmm, Crucial M4 or M500?
