Vista Home Premium all latest update but not SP1 on P6831FX notebook.

Using stopwatch, nothing fancy, in minutes and seconds.

Free Agent Pro 500GB 7200 rpm using SATA interface 3:00 (Best Time)

4 year old Acom firewire interface with 160 5400 rpm IDE drive 3:46

4 year old Simple Tech USB 160 5400 rpm 7:52

New Seagate Free Agent 500GB 7,200 rpm USB 9:23 (!)

    160G WD Passport 5400rpm 6:09
    160G WD Passport 5400rpm 6:00 on 1705 XP Home

    Old 4200rpm in $15 2.5" USB case 7:59
    Old 4200rpm in $15 2.5" USB case 7:50 on 1705 XP Home

    Notes:
Two drives I tested appear faster on XP.
SATA external fastest on reading from to internal SATA.
Would like to see what Firewire 800 interface would have clocked.

These clocks reflect my particular laptop, your times are most likely to be all over the map due to chipsets, drivers and OS used. At least I know what I’m dealing with ;) and I find it interesting how well my old firewire 400 did on current OS.
