I've got like 4 HDD in my desktop computer and does used them because I always use my notebook since I got it. I was wondering why a homemade external HDD would not work ?
Here's 2 plans :
Take an internal Sata Drive and
1) Power it with an old PSU(or buy a cheap one) and then connect it thru a eSata to sata wire (my notebook got an Esata port)
2) Because I don't own an old PSU, I could use 2 DC invertors (black boxes plugged to wall) : a 12volts and a 5volts and take a classic 4-pin plug and weld it all... Again connected with the esata to sata wire
P.S = I already got the 2 AC to DC boxes
Because i already got the drive, it would cost none to 20 bucks
Would it work ? if not why ?
And btw, if it works I would make some kind of vented box or something, don't worry, im aware about electrostatic.
Thanks in advance

couldn't you just get an enclosure?

^^I think that is the best advice.

Yeah just buy a couple of empty enclosures from ebay and put your drives inside
probably be cheaper and a bit less dangerous.

dont push him off, he has a good idea.
I think it is very possible to do what you are doing.
Just make sure you wire the two power supplies so that the wires and voltages match what a standard Molex or SATA wire has.
Test the power supply with something cheap like an old cd drive, cause if you burn out your harddrive cause of a simple mistake you are going to be pissed off.
Good luck,

K-T sure he is on to something but don't you really think the simple and safe thing to do is just buy an enclosure? Possible and best advice are different I think?

easy way = enclosure
want some adventure, go do it, just make sure the current is stable
Homemade External HDD ?
