So I got a used Acer AL2216W for quite cheap, but when I am viewing dark colors, there is flickering horizontal bands across the monitor.

Anyone know what the problem is? This flickering isn't viewable when viewing light colours.

Stick in an external monitor and see what happens. Hopefully just a failing LCD.

    cheers ...

Is the monitor hooked up via VGA or DVI? etc.

It's currently connected through VGA. I borrowed my friend's HDMI to DVI cable and it seems like the problem is gone... so faulty VGA input? I don't know if thats a reasonable solution, I'd rather not waste 25$ getting a new cable if it's not.

It's just interference with the analog VGA input, where the digital DVI is not affected. Stick with DVI/HDMI if you can. Even if you get another VGA cable, there probably won't be much of a difference.

Try make sure that no wires are touching each other, ie the VGA cable, the monitor's power cable, the computer's power cable etc. In my experience, doing this *helps* but it's still there..

Yeah I had this same problem using VGA it made playing games almost unbearable although it was barely noticeable on the internet because of the white pages I guess. I switched to a hdmi to dvi cable and it completely disappeared.

    Sweet, thanks a lot man.

Yeah I tried using another VGA cable and the problem persisted. Ok I'll be out to buy an HDMI to DVI cable :D
