I can't find a search function on these forums.

What are peoples opinions on these vs the intel core 2 duos?

I am buying a laptop and there are 2 for the same price, one has a AMD Turion X2 TL-60 Dual-Core Mobile 2.0ghz and geforce 8600m GS and its 32bit(i prefer 32bit) and there is one with Intel Core 2 Duo T5850 2.16GHz and geforce 8600M GS but its 64 bit.

The processor speeds aren't very different but which one is better. Intel seems to be the most used cpu brand now.

Depends upon what sort of tasks do you need the CPU for....
For gaming the intel C2D T5850 will be better, but the performance difference will not be 'huge'....The TL-60 is a good all-rounder as well..!!
If the TL-60 is on the Kite Refresh Platform, your notebook will be able to support DDR2-800 memory modules, but the PM965 with the intel C2D will support only DDR2-667 modules..!! (Again, the difference between the two isn't huge)
But if the notebook is for gaming, I would go with the intel..!!

Yeah I want to go for intel also, but I don't know if I really want 64 bit because of drivers and compatibility issues. The only games I will be playing are world of warcraft and team fortress 2.

Most of the software is compatible with Vista x64 and if the manufacturer is providing all the vista x64 drivers, then you shouldn't have any problem....

The Core 2 Duo is not only more efficient in terms of performance per clock, they also run cooler and consume less power than AMD X2s. Go for the Intel.

Another vote for the C2D. The Turions run HOT! Not to mention a Pentium Dual Core(a gelded C2D aimed at the low end market) [email protected] walks all over the TL-60. Dont get me wrong, the TL's are decent chips, but they are just way past their prime.

actually amd's should theoretically run cooler because they can be undervolted a large degree. However, one must not confuse inefficiency and heat output. The temperature of the processor is not really related to the cpu, but the thermal diode which senses the cpu's temperature, and how the motherboard bios receives that information. Most laptops are designed to stay quiet, which means the fan comes on less, which means that a very high temperature must be met for the fans to come on. Most systems have the fans come on at around 160F, but it varies between different model laptops.
I have a very power hungry amd in my laptop which uses 125 watts of power, which is more than 4 x what standard turions use, and my cpu never runs over 55C, becuase of the low temperature my fans kick in at. You can make the cpu run as cool as you like, but you will need software or a hard modification to do that.

All in all, most people do vote for the intel laptops, but the new amd puma line and ati graphics are really nice laptops too. The TL-60 is from the last generation amd turion processors, so the intels are indeed faster and can do more cycles per Mhz, but usually the amd's are much cheaper.

Ok thanks, I will get the intel system, even if it does have 64bit.

I guess it depends on what apps you are running. My TL-58 hangs pretty well with a T7400 Merom in wPrime, but not so well in others. Against a Penryn, I likely wouldn't stand a chance in either power or efficiency....

    Really?
    I'm at 30C right now.
Turion X2s wont be much hotter.

Team Fortress 2 runs fine in a 64 bit OS. I played it all the time on my old desktop that has Vista Business x64 on it, and somehow my ATI Radeon 9700 Pro still has some oomph in that game.

That is a sweet temp there for the MK-36, if you are running stock. My guess is that the Inspirons have a better chassis insofar as cooling, because the HP Pavilions won't see temps like that out of the box. I'm idling 47C with a BIOS update that changes the fan algorithms to run accelerated........
