How come my Studio 15 display looks blah but my Dell Netbook display is AWESOME?

    Thanks everyone for your help...

I just received a Studio 15 with the 720p screen. Wasn't sure about the 900p screen because I thought the text might be really tiny.

I also got the mini 10v and even thought the screen is small, the text is nice and crisp.

The text on the Studio is kind of blah...it's ok but it's not really super sharp and crisp like on the netbook.

Is this because the netbooks's small screen makes everything look this way? Or is the 720p resolution just too low. I wasn't sure if increasing the resolution does more than just increase screen real estate.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Scott

Run Everest and check if you have the Samsung 720p screen. It's not a very good screen.

Also, have you checked that Cleartype is enabled?

The studio 15 has an LED back-light...

unless you are suggesting that LED back-lights are bad...?

There is nothing inherently wrong with the Samsung SEC5441 720p display. I have it and it is miles ahead of my old Studio 15's CCFL display.

The same resolution will look much sharper on the netbook display because everything is compressed into a tighter space. It's like watching standard definition TV on a 60" projection screen as opposed to an 8" countertop CRT. Same resolution and image quality, but the smaller screen looks much sharper.

And there is nothing wrong with LED backlighting. It's way better than the old-fashioned CCFL backlights. I think he was just confused and thought that the Studio 15 did not have LED backlighting.

    Thanks everyone for the responses!

So basically, if I got the 900p screen, everything would still look the same? It wouldn't have that slick crisp look i get on the smaller screen?

One part is sharpness, which is better on the 10" display because it's smaller.
Another part is contrast. The Samsung screen has relatively low contrast which can give a washed out look.
Another part is black level. Since text is mainly black, low black levels can make text look not so crisp.

If you run Everest to establish what screen you have. And tell us if Cleartype is enabled, I can say more.

Cleartype is enabled. I ran Everest and I can't figure out where to find the display manufacturer.

In the beginning of the report it says "Generic PnP Monitor [NoDB]"

I'm probably looking in the wrong spot!

    Thanks again for your help.

    Click display, monitor, monitor id.

It should say AUO or SEC or maybe ...

    SEC5441...

When Everest is running, my system locks up every ten seconds or so. Does this sound normal?

    Thanks again for your help!

Yes that's normal on studio 1555. I don't know why.

You'd probably be a lot more satisfied with the 1600*900 screen. It's sharper, has better contrast and black levels.

The 1080p (depending on what panel you get) is likely to be even better, you can always increase the font size.

yea, the problem seems to be that everything looks kind of washed out...I guess that's the contrast thing...

Will the text on the 1600 X 900 screen be really small? Or just a drop smaller than the 720p screen?

I appreciate everyone's responses...I have a couple of days left on the return time so I'm trying to make sure I love this machine..
