    Hi,

As previously advised I now have a DVD drive caddy for my HDD
I put the Samsung 830 SSD in the hdd drive.

I srewed all the screws back in the caddy after inserting the hdd, but ive turned the Sony Vaio SVE 1512J1EW laptop and under 'Computer' I only see the SSD with the OS on

So what have I missed or done wrong?
I thought I could just replace the DVD drive for a caddy with my HDD in and it would show in my Computer

How can I get the HDD in the caddy to show on my computer? so I can save all my files there?

    thanks

Is the drive showing up under BIOS?

    no i dont think so,
where should it be showing in BIOS?

Under boot the option selected is 'UEFI' and the other option is Legacy
but i went through all the bios sections and is states my 128GB SSD but no mention of the 640gb hdd?

s the hdd is not there, does that suggest its not connected properly or faulty caddy?

It is an unbranded caddy, titled 'Second HDD Caddy' i bought off ebay

it should show in the bios where the dvd drive used to be.

it should be plug and play

The caddy itself doesn't really have much to do with anything. It simply makes for a snug fit for your drive. you don't want the drive held in there only by its connector. The caddy shouldn't affect functionality. You correctly (and tightly) inserted the SATA connector right? Could you may be click a picture and post it on here? If it is not in the bios, it is not detected and that means either ESD damaged it while you were inserting it (unlikely, but possible) or it isn't correctly seated in there.

    thanks everyone,
well i tried again and this time made sure everything clicked into place, and it works!!

my question now is, as the hdd in the caddy was in the laptop as the only drive with the OS and all my music/files on, what is the best way to do a clean/fresh wipe, to get rid of the OS?

Temporarily i will put all my files/music on the ssd while i wipe the hdd clear, then transfer them back over to the hdd

    - also would it make a difference in speed.multitasking if i install all my software to the hdd instead of the 128gb ssd?
i assume is i preserve as much space on the ssd and just have the OS on it, everything will run faster?

    thanks

If you install your programs on the HDD - you'll negate one of the reasons for getting an SSD. ;)

    No; it won't run faster.

What you gain by leaving free space on the SSD (specifically 'unallocated' capacity) is not a faster SSD - but one that doesn't slow down to HDD levels (or below) while using it.

The 'steady state' performance of SSD's is not what the spec's say on the box when you buy it. Those spec's state the maximum the controller/nand combo will do with no O/S or Data on the drive...

As for getting rid of the HDD O/S install:

    Right click on Computer,
    click Manage,
click Disk Management (on the far left),
select the correct drive and right click on each partition and remove it.

When all the partition's are deleted - create a new (single) partition, format it (quick is fine) and give it a drive letter.

    Copy your data back on.

    Done. :)

Glad you got it working, hope you enjoy it for a long time to come.

    thanks tiller,

am i right in thinking your saying i should install the software i use on the ssd, i only have light use, googlechrome, itunes, MS Office,

I done as you said to clear the hdd but there are 5 partitions on the hdd and it only let me delete one of them, the big 670gb one, when right click on the other 4 the only option i have is "help"

    this is the disk management:

i dont need the recovery partition as i have the Sony recovery DVDs and this recovery partition was from my old ASUS
laptop, but there is no option to remove or delete the partition

should i just ignore those other 4 partitions?

You can't delete the partitions if you've booted from the drive...
