I've just purchased a 320GB WD Passport Essential and would like to know the model of the HD inside. Does anyone know of a website that can provide this if you input the model and serial number? Any suggestions would be excellent.

    Cheers!

I had the exact same drive and there was a WD3200BEVT in it... I am pretty sure that yours has the same drive in it too...

You can try using HD tune and see what it reports.

That's what I've read too, Thanks!

I'd rather not open the package. A friend is interested but wants to know the model of HD he's buying. Unless there is a website available for looking it up, this is the only option. Anyone know of such a website?

you can find out through hdtune.
However you need to install a windows patch to allow S.M.A.R.T. readings to be read over USB. I know it has been done before.
I think nbr member "stewie" mentioned it a while back

Did you read his post? :D

He didn't tell you to open it up or something :)

HD Tune is an application that allows you to see what kind of HDD you have. Just software.Download it via the link he gave you in his post! :)

Uh, yes I think I did read his post. Now unless I'm dumber than the average rock (possibly), the unopened passport would need to be connected to a computer for HD Tune to read the drive info, correct? So there is the dilemma. The buyer will purchase it if I can verify the model of internal hard drive but I don't want to open it just for him and therefore loose the 'unopened' status.

I think they thought that you already opened the box, and you didn't want to open the enclosure that the drive is in ;)

Now without opening it, it'll be hard to know anything for sure.you could call up western digital and ask them which drive they use in the external. Hope this helps.

Avanish11 at least you read and understood. Hadn't thought of calling WD, very good. I knew I'd eventually find assistance here at NBR. I must say this site has provided a wealth of reliable information. + Rep to Avanish11
