My desktop from 2006 is a Sony RC210G, which has sata HDD but IDE DVD drives. Can I install a bluray drive into the ports deigned for HDD? I heard some had problems doing this.

This should be posted in the desktop forum. However, to quickly answer your question, just plug it into a SATA port instead, you don't need to use a hard disk to use SATA, it's all the same.

In case BD playback is intended, I'd strongly advise to run Cyberlink's BD advisor software in order to find out what other requirements need to be met also.
