Single 2gb stick hu.....Just buy a 2x1gb kit to be safe. Not sure if that toshiba chipset will support a single 2gb stick as its about 1 1/2 years old.

2gb is already a massive amount of RAM for Windows XP. Overkill for most people. Heck even 1gb is plenty to avoid swap file usage in XP for most people.

Your Satellite L35-S2161 can support up to 2gb of DDR2 ram. Like onion said, it would be best to get 2 x 1gb of ram instead of a stick of 2gb ram.

It really does not matter, it is probably better to by just 1 gb now, and have 1.5gb, and maybe in the summer you could upgrade to 2gb because ddr2 sodimm laptop memory will be even cheaper by then.

For windows XP I would just get a single 1gb stick. 1.5gb is a massive amount for XP. Remember we're not talking about Vista here.

If you do lots of multi-tasking and deal with large files, get 2gb. If you're just gonna surf online, use ms office and other light applications, 1.5gb is more than enough.

Thank you everyone. I really appreciate it.

Will I be able to install this by myself? I've worked with desktops before but not laptops.

Yes, ram is a simple and easy job for anyone. Just remove a panel door and take out the old ram/put in the new one. It should take less than 1 minute for an experienced person, a few more for someone doing it their first time.
