How do I find out the max resolution by notebook graphic card can support on an external display?

I have an HP dv5000, integrated graphics.

I would like to display thinks on an external monitor at 1680x1050.

    Thank you.

    You're fine.

    FYI
    Max for VGA: 2048 x 1536
    Max for DVI: 1600 x 1200 (1680 x 1050 works though...I've tested it)
Max for D-DVI: At least 2560 x 1600 but probably more

    Thank you.

And if I want to use the LCD as the sole display (i.e., not a dual-display set-up), what is the best way to output to the LCD? DVI, or does VGA result in the same output quality? Thanks.
